U.S. Designers Use Red Oak in Mumbai
The Index Furniture Fair, held in Mumbai, India September 13-17, is India's premiere show for
the furniture manufacturing and design industries.
AHEC staff was joined by designers Martin Maher and John Kelly, running a booth featuring a display
of hardwood furniture that stood out for many observers from other pieces at the show.
The two designers worked together to create a red oak table; they crafted a piece characterized by
simple lines and complex joinery. John uses American hardwoods - including walnut, cherry, and
white oak - in many of his designs, but this was his first time using red oak.
He stated the experience was very positive and he is inclined to use red oak in future designs. He was
especially impressed with red oak's seasoning and its natural finish. John Kelly gave a seminar
on September 15th discussing his use of American hardwoods in furniture.
At the fair, AHEC was able to begin work with India's most important research institute, which will
put American hardwoods through a wood testing program leading eventually to endorsement of
American hardwood by the institute.
It was a similar endorsement which led to the popularity of European beech in the Indian market, and
AHEC is confident that an endorsement will lead to a substantial increase in market share for
American hardwoods.
