INSPIRING NEW IDEAS IN FURNITURE DESIGN
Winners from Four Universities will Feature Their Big Ideas in Oak at the International Home Furnishings Market this Fall.
This spring, The New Oak Partnership, an organization comprised of members of the nation’s leading hardwood manufacturers and timber resource companies, sponsored the 2007 “The Big Idea” Student Design Contest. Sixty-five students from four leading U.S. college- and university-level furniture design programs participated in the contest, created to give students, the furniture industry’s future designers, a hands-on appreciation for working with American Red Oak. Winning designs will be featured at the fall High Point International Home Furnishings Market during Fall 2007.
Participating schools included Georgia Tech University, Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD), and North Carolina State University. Winners from each school were awarded cash prizes ranging up to $1,250. The contest’s judging panel consisted of professors from each of the participating colleges and universities as well as a
representative from The New Oak Partnership. Judging spanned a two-month period, and included criteria such as originality of design, use of oak wood and the project’s overall practicality and ability to be manufactured. Student projects ranged from dining tables and chairs to bookcases and benches. The New Oak Partnership member companies donated the oak used in the students’ projects.
The New Oak Student Design Contest was created to showcase the beauty and functionality of American red and white oak designs in furniture. The competition affords design students the opportunity to use solid oak in a major national project and have their work promoted internationally.
